about

Often referred to as the "Ballad of America", this piece is based on a poem written by Dr. Brewster Higley in the early 1870's and set to music by Daniel Kelly. Interestingly enough, the original poem does NOT contain the phrase "home on the range". President Franklin Roosevelt said that this was his favourite song, and in 1947 it became the State song of Kansas.

lyrics

Oh, give me a home where the buffalo roam,
Where the deer and the antelope play,
Where seldom is heard a discouraging word
And the skies are not cloudy all day.

Home, home on the range,
Where the deer and the antelope play;
Where seldom is heard a discouraging word
And the skies are not cloudy all day.

Where the air is so pure, the zephyrs so free,
The breezes so balmy and light,
That I would not exchange my home on the range
For all of the cities so bright.
